GORHAM, Maine — Rookie Jayne Lewis (Troy, Ill.) and sophomore Katie Stueve (Chester Springs, Penn.) each had a goal and an assist as the visiting Sacred Heart University Pioneers scored four unanswered goals en route to a 4-1, come-from-behind victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conference women’s ice hockey action Tuesday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the fourth straight for the Pioneers and extended their unbeaten string to five games. The Pioneers moved over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 7-6-1, and are 7-2-1 in their last 10 games after an 0-4-0 start. The Huskies dropped their third straight game to slip to 3-8-0 overall. The two teams will meet again Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in the back half of their two-game series.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead at 7:20 of the opening period when sophomore Alex Mitchell (Wrentham, Mass.) converted a 2-on-1 situation into her second goal of the season. Mitchell redirected a pass from senior Katie Couture (Harrisville, R.I.) by SHU junior goalie Devan Kane (Scarborough, Maine) for the goal.
The Huskies’ lead lasted just 2:20 as junior Meghan Kebalka (Lebanon, N.H.) scored an unassisted goal at 9:40 to tie the game. Lewis gave the Pioneers the lead for good at 17:30when she netted her second goal of the season off assists from Stueve and junior Taylor Moreland (Kenosha, Wis.).
Southern Maine sophomore goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) kept the Huskies in the game through the second period as the Pioneers outshot Huskies 12-5. Evangelista stopped everything fired at her to keep the Huskies’ deficit at one.
The Pioneers got two goals in the third period to put the game away. Sophomore Lilly Cleary (Norwell, Mass.) made it 3-1 at 10:21 finishing off a nice passing sequence from Moreland and Lewis. Stueve potted the final goal at 16:41 assisted by junior Carly Radovich (Hopkinton, Mass.).
Kane earned the win in goal stopping 16 of 17 shots. Evangelista finished with 29 saves.
