WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Thomas College softball team exited the NCAA Tournament after a 5-0 extra innings loss to Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the elimination game on Saturday morning at Cole Field.
The Engineers move on to face the College of Staten Island immediately in another elimination game as the Terriers season comes to an end at 14-23.
Terriers’ pitcher Sydney LeBourveau (Jericho, Vt.) and Engineers’ pitcher Stephanie Caulde kept batters off balance all game holding teams scoreless in the first seven innings.
The Terriers threatened in the bottom of the seventh as LeBourveau hit a double off the center field fence to put a runner in scoring position. Madison Bentz (Algonquin, Ill.) moved LeBourveau to third on a sacrifice bunt. RPI got out of the jam with a strikeout and pop out to push the game to extra innings.
The Engineers broke open the scoring in the top of the eighth inning as Caudle ripped a base hit to center field to bring in Veronica DeStefano who reached earlier on an error. After Devan Puhl scored on a wild pitch, Courtney McArthur knocked a three-run homerun to left center to take a 5-0 lead.
Thomas could not answer in the final frame, finishing the scoring at 5-0.
LeBourveau took the loss in eight innings of work, allowing five hits and five runs (none earned). Courtney Veilleux (Sidney, Maine) held two of the Terriers’ three hits on the day.
Caudle earned the victory on the mound for RPI in eight innings, allowing three hits and no runs.
