Rhode Island College Men's college basketball 67 at Southern Maine 51

GORHAM, Maine – Senior Malcolm Smith (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/St. Andrews) scored 15 points and had eight rebounds to lead three players in double figures as the Rhode Island College Anchormen defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 67-51 in a Little East Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.

Earning its first conference win of the season, RIC improves to 3-10 overall and 1-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine dips to 0-4 in the LEC and 1-13 overall.

Malcolm was 5-for-11 from the floor for his team-high 15 points. Senior Roosevelt Shider (Meriden, Conn./Wilcox Tech) added 13 points, while junior Justin Campbell (New Haven, Conn./Hill Regional) scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Sophomore CJ Donaldson (Bridgeport, Conn./Westhill) contributed with seven points, 10 rebounds and seven assists.

USM senior Christian McCue (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) led all scorers with 19 points. Junior Sean Jany (Westbrook, Maine) had with points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, while sophomore Keenan Hendricks (Owls Head, Maine/Oceanside) tossed in seven points. Freshman DJ Anderson (Houston, Texas/Davis) had five points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Led by 11 points from Shider, and 10 points from Smith, Rhode Island College took a 30-25 lead into the halftime break. RIC trailed USM 20-18 with five minutes left to play in the first half, but outscored the Huskies 12-5 in the closing minutes to grab the lead for good. Shider scored six of his points, on a pair of threes, to highlight the Anchormen run.

RIC pulled away from the Huskies in the second half. The Anchormen used a 10-5 run in the opening five minutes of the second stanza to generate a double-digit, 40-30, lead. Four different players score for RIC in the run. A layup from junior Grant Gillis (Jamestown, R.I./North Kingstown) with 6:22 remaining in regulation game RIC its largest lead of the game, 60-37, before the Huskies whittled it down to 15, 63-48, with 3:21 to play on the heels of an 11-3 spurt. McCue scored seven of his 19 in the run, but the Huskies were unable to overcome the deficit as time ran down.

The Anchormen shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field in the game and had a commanding 44-22 advantage in rebounds. USM shot 33.9 percent (19-for-56) from the floor, and 87.5 percent (7-for-8) from the free throw line in the game.

Southern Maine hosts Eastern Connecticut on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference doubleheader.
