GORHAM, Maine – Senior Stephanie Ricci (Smithfield, R.I.) had a goal and an assist to propel the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 3-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women’s soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.
Suffering its fourth straight loss, Southern Maine slides to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Little East. Rhode Island College, picking up its second win in three games, is now 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
RIC took a 1-0 lead midway through the first half on a strong individual effort from junior Olivia Capraro (North Providence, R.I.). Capraro sprinted onto a searching ball from her midfield, and then was able to tackle the ball away from a USM defender to create a one-on-one situation in the box, slotting the ball past the outstretched hands of USM junior goalkeeper Taylor Canastra (Fairhaven, Mass.). Capraro’s goal stood through the half.
The Anchormen quickly doubled their advantage in the second stanza, as Ricci completed a well-placed flat ball across the box in the 47th minute. The goal was Ricci’s team-leading fourth of the season. With a 2-0 lead in hand, RIC put the game away in the 83rd minute when Ricci fed junior Elena Couto (Coventry, R.I.) with a through ball down the right side of the field. Couto took a touch on the ball and then connected with a near-post goal for the 3-0 final.
Southern Maine has a mid-week non-conference match up for its next contest and will travel to Colby on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). The Anchormen travel to Lesley University on Thursday (8:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game.
