BANGOR, Maine—Husson (12-6), swept the University of Maine-Presque Isle (5-7) in a doubleheader at Alfond Diamond on Sunday, taking the first game by a score of 9-0 and the second 7-0.
Husson opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning after a two-run single from Courtney McIntyre scored baserunners Kylie Kennedy and Paige Veilleux-Adams.
continued the scoring for the Eagles in the bottom of the third inning. Kennedy roped a single that scored Olivia Smith
, one of her three RBIs on the day, and was then brought home on a single from Veilleux-Adams to give Husson a 4-0 lead through the third inning.
The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning on a deep ground-rule double from Chloe Gorey
that scored Casey Heath
. Tamara Aunchman
made it back-to-back ground-rule doubles for the Eagles, bringing Gorey home and giving Husson a commanding 6-0 lead.
UMPI looked to make a late move in the top of the fifth inning with singles from Nicole Marucci and Ariel Williams. The runners advanced to second and third on a passed ball, but pitcher Jen Jones
was able to tee up a strikeout to end the inning without surrendering a run.
Husson would end the game early in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the mercy rule. Aunchman scored Lavoie with an RBI single, her second RBI of the game. Kennedy would finish the game with a 2-RBI single, scoring Caitlin Bean
and Aunchman to finish the game with a 9-0 win.
Husson was able to hold the Owls scoreless with a strong performance from pitcher Jen Jones
. Jones recorded 11 strikeouts in six innings of work while only giving up six hits. The 11 strikeouts is a new career high for Jones, and ties the school record for most strikeouts since Husson joined the NCAA.
Packard got the loss for UMPI, giving up nine earned runs and fourteen hits to the Eagles while striking out three batters.
Husson added their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Briana Brochu, who singled earlier in the inning, scored from third on a passed ball to give the Eagles an early lead. Morgan Coleman then roped a single down the left field line to bring in Nicole Andrade and put Husson up 2-0.
Andrade continued the scoring for Husson in the fourth inning with a ground-rule double to left field that scored Brianna Bires
and B. Brochu. After Andrade advanced to third on a passed ball, Tamara Aunchman
hit an RBI single up the middle of the infield to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning Bires launched a triple deep to right field to send Courtney McIntyre
home and extend Husson’s lead. B. Brochu immediately followed that with a single of her own to score Bires and give Husson a 7-0 lead.
pitched an outstanding game for the Eagles, earning the win while striking out three batters and only giving up two hits in her seven innings of work.
Packard pitched once again for the Owls, getting her second loss of the day while striking out six and giving up seven earned runs and 13 hits.
