At Presque Isle, senior point guard Chandler Guerrette scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Presque Isle Wildcats to a 52-40 girls’ basketball victory over Mount Desert Island at Parady Gymnasium on Friday night.
The Trojans struggled with turnovers, posting more than 30 for the game, but stayed close as they tried to avenge a seven-point loss to the undefeated Wildcats earlier this season.
MDI closed the gap to 45-40 with 1:49 remaining in the game, but the Trojans had to foul to get the ball back, and the Wildcats hit seven of eight free throws to close out the scoring.
Sophomore guard/forward Hannah Graham added a dozen points for Presque Isle (14-0), and senior guard Megan Ireland posted six.
Junior forward Hannah Shaw and her sister, freshman forward Kelsey Shaw, each scored 10 points for MDI (11-2). Senior guard Emily Lewis hit a pair of 3-pointers for six points for the Trojans.
Presque Isle opened the final quarter with an 11-point lead, but the Trojans fought back with 3-pointers. Back-to-back baskets by Kelsey Shaw trimmed the margin to 45-40.
After MDI started fouling to get the ball back, turnovers plagued the Trojans again. MDI made four turnovers in the final 1:30 and only got one shot off during that stretch.
Both teams struggled early with turnovers, with the Wildcats making seven in the first quarter and MDI making 10, but a three-point run by MDI in the final 1:17 cut PI’s lead to 13-10.
A low-scoring second quarter kept the teams close until a turnover by MDI turned a potential basket by the Trojans into two points for Presque Isle and a six-point halftime edge.
Guerrette heated up in the third quarter, making a pair of 3s en route to an eight-point quarter that pushed PI’s lead to 34-23 after three.
