ELLSWORTH, Maine — Meg Leighton and Brittany Cousins combined for seven hits and five RBIs to power the Old Town Coyotes to their seventh straight high school softball victory, a 13-0 win over Ellsworth in six innings on Thursday.
Leighton slammed two doubles and a single and collected three RBIs for the 7-0 Coyotes, and Cousins posted four singles, a sacrifice fly and two RBIs.
They backed the four-hit pitching of ace Kendra Hayward, who also rang up nine strikeouts and walked only one.
Cristin Wright’s leadoff double in the fourth was the big blow for the Eagles (3-3).
The other three Ellsworth hits were singles, and two of them came in the first inning back-to-back, by Heather Holt and Emily Berry with one out. Hayward struck out the next two batters to shut down the threat. No Ellsworth runners progressed farther than second base in the game.
Other repeat hitters for the Coyotes were Rachel Martin with two singles, both in the eight-run sixth inning that closed out the scoring; and Kayla Madden and Lauren Martin with two singles each.
Megan Hunt pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for Ellsworth, striking out none and walking none but giving up 14 hits. Mariah Brown finished the sixth with a strikeout, a walk, two hits batsmen and two hits.
