BREWER, Maine — Timely hitting by Brittany Cousins that backed the sharp pitching of Kendra Hayward led the Old Town Coyotes to a 4-1 victory Thursday over Nokomis in the Eastern Maine Class B softball final at Coffin Field.
The Coyotes (16-4) return to Coffin Field at 11 a.m. Saturday to play for their first softball state championship. Old Town will take on the WM winner, a matchup of No. 1 Fryeburg Academy and No. 2 Greely of Cumberland Center.
Cousins posted a pair of RBI singles. The first came in the second inning to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead. She added the other in the sixth inning to help Old Town build a cushion after the Warriors scored in the top of the sixth to trim the margin to a single run.
Hayward gave up five hits, struck out nine and walked none.
Becky Orcutt provided most of the offense for Nokomis with a pair of hits, including an RBI double she smashed over left fielder Cousins’ head in the sixth inning.
Sara Packard gave up four hits and struck out five, but she walked three and Nokomis made five errors.
