WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women’s basketball team dropped a 67-53 decision to New England College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup on Friday at Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
In the defeat, the Terriers fall to 7-15 (4-11 NAC) while the Pilgrims earn their first win in three games, moving to 17-6 (11-5 NAC).
Thomas opened the first five minutes of the quarter on an 8-4 run after two three-pointers and a layup from junior Jordan Turner (Casco, Maine / Lake Region). Rene Hudson came up big for the Pilgrims scoring nine of her team’s 15 first quarter points on 4-of-6 shooting. Freshman Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine / Edward Little) added six points to give the Terriers an 18-15 lead.
Midway through the second, shots would not fall for NEC as they were held scoreless for just over three minutes. The Terriers extended their lead to eight after a three from Stubbs with 4:04 left in the first half. Haleigh Martin netted the Pilgrims last four points of the half while Amira Jones (Chicopee, Mass. / Chicopee) added six for the Terriers to hold 35-27 advantage at the break.
NEC began to take over in the third quarter as their defense allowed just seven points and forced seven turnovers. Hudson added six points in five minutes to open the quarter before having to sit with four fouls. The Pilgrims finished the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 43-42 lead going into the final frame.
The Pilgrims rode their hot shooting throughout the fourth, finishing the quarter at 10-for-20 on the field. Tiffany Davis and Mikala Malboeuf combined for 12 points to finish the scoring at 67-53. Thomas struggled on the floor, shooting 2-for-13 (15.4 %).
Turner led the Terriers with 14 points and pulled in three rebounds. Jones added 10 points and four rebounds in the loss.
Hudson notched a game-high 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting in just 17 minutes while Malboeuf finished with 11 points and nine rebounds.
