CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball fell to New England College 62-60 on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Smith Gymnasium.
Rene Hudson hit a three to open up the scoring for the Pilgrims, but the Mariners battled back with two points from Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine), Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.), and Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) to take a 6-3 lead.
The Pilgrims put together an 11-2 run to take a 12-8 lead, and held onto that lead until two free throws from McLean with 4:53 to go in the second quarter tied the game at 22-22. New England College scored eight-unanswered points to rebuild a 30-22 advantage, but the Mariners continued to battle, outscoring the Pilgrims 7-3 to close out the half and cut the deficit to four points (33-29).
The two teams exchanged baskets back-and-forth early in the third quarter, before the Mariners put together a six-point run, led by four points from Felix, to tie the game at 39-39 at 2:21. Tiffany Davis made a layup for the Pilgrims but Felix capitalized on a three-point play to give the Mariners a 42-41 lead at 1:37. Hudson hit a three to put the Pilgrims back up by two, and NEC took a 46-44 lead into the final quarter.
Hudson hit a jumper to breaking nearly two minutes without scoring to open up the fourth quarter, putting the Pilgrims up 48-44. Felix made a basket on the other end to close the gap to two, but NEC hit one from the line to make it 49-46 at 7:24. The Mariners scored seven-unanswered points to take a 53-49 lead with 4:17 to play, but the Pilgrims responded with nine-unanswered points to take a 58-53 lead. Felix hit another layup to close the gap to three with 28 seconds to go and NEC’s Davis made one of her free throws to make it a four-point game just a second later.
Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) splashed a three with 24 seconds to go to close the gap to 59-58, the Pilgrims only hit one of their free throws once again, to keep the Mariners in the game and Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) hit a jumper with 17 seconds to go to make to tie the game at 60-60, but Utshana Durham navigated through the Mariner defenders and made a layup in the final seconds of the game to lift the Pilgrims to victory.
Felix led all players with 25 points, while also adding three rebounds, three steals, and an assist, McLean ended the afternoon with 13 points, five rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
Hudson led the Pilgrims with 20 points, five rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block, and Durham added 11 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Davis led all players with nine rebounds, while also adding six points and a steal.
The Mariners fall to 9-9 overall and 6-6 in the NAC, while the Chargers improve to 15-4 on the season and 9-3 in the conference.
