BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University men’s soccer team was defeated by New England College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Boucher Field.

In a pregame ceremony senior’s Cody GrossJosh BellomoSaker GhanayemGage KennedyMartin Lidholm and Andrew Wicklund were all recognized for their contributions to the Husson men’s soccer program.

In the 26th minute of the first half, Cooper Valinski netted the only goal of the match when Sina Samali played a ball in front of the net to Valinski. He did the rest and put the Pilgrims up 1-0.

The Eagles had a few chances in the first half but could not manage to tie the game.

Husson had the majority of the possession in the second half. The Eagles applied pressure throughout and forced the ball down field every opportunity they had. Even with the constant attack, the home team did not find the back of the net.

New England College held onto the 1-0 lead.

Cody Gross was tabbed with the loss for Husson while saving seven of eight shots on goal. Tenzin Khenrab saved all five shots on goal.

Coach Penny on the game:

“I’m tremendously disappointed for the team. It’s another game where we have done a lot of good things and have not taken any points for our efforts. We had chances and should have scored so it’s becoming the same old story. We just need to keep plugging away and as long as we make the playoffs anything can happen. We can beat anyone on our day and I believe we can still win this league. I just want to place on record my apology for the mess at the end of the game. Their is no room for that in football and I won’t tolerate it. We are Husson University and that is not who we are.”

The Eagles fall to 7-6-0 on the season and 4-3-0 in NAC play, while the Pilgrims improve to 8-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play. Husson retuns to action next Saturday, October 21 at 3:30 at Green Mountain for a conference game.
