At Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday night, Hunter Smith rushed for two touchdowns and passed for two more scores as the third-ranked Ponies topped No. 6 Mount Desert Island in an Eastern Maine Class C quarterfinal.

The Ponies (7-2) will play at second-ranked Waterville (7-1) in next Saturday’s semifinal. MDI ends its season at 3-6.

Smith, a junior quarterback, rushed 11 times for 109 yards and completed 6 of 10 passes for 78 yards. Billy Brock added a touchdown reception and a 69-yard kickoff return for a score, while Peter Boyer rushed six times for 33 yards.

Clay Carroll led the Foxcroft defense with 13 tackles.

MDI’s Jalique Keene topped all rushers in the game with 167 yards on 23 attempts, while the Trojans’ Taner Bickforrd added 44 rushing yards and Sandy Henggeler ran for 40 yards and all three MDI touchdowns.

Smith opened the scoring with a 37-yard run early in the first quarter, and Nate Church added the first of his five extra-point kicks to stake Foxcroft to a 7-0 lead.

A 6-yard scoring run by Henggeler narrowed the gap to 7-6, but Smith found Chris Storer with a 10-yard touchdown pass to extend Foxcroft’s lead to 14-6 before the end of the period.

Smith hit Brock with a 16-yard touchdown pass as the Ponies extended their lead to 21-6 at halftime, then rushed 32 yards to the end zone to push the margin to 28-6 in the third quarter.

Henggeler countered with a 4-yard run to make it 28-12, but Brock returned the ensuing kickoff to the end zone to give Foxcroft a 35-12 cushion.

Henggeler capped off the scoring with a 3-yard run, and Keene added the two-point conversion run.
