FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball fell to the University of Maine at Farmington 83-71, on Thursday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action, inside of Dearborn Gymnasium.


The Beavers took an early 6-2 lead following back-to-back threes from Issac Witham, but the Mariners fought back tying the game at 6-6 at 17:46 after consecutive baskets from Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine).


UMaine-Farmington took their biggest lead of the game with 9:38 to go in the first half, following three-straight three-pointers from Ryan Camire, but the Mariners battled back again, and put together an eight-point run to close the gap to 25-21 at 6:57. Back-to-back baskets from Thayer and a layup from Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) tied the game up at 29-29 at 3:22.


The Beavers scored six-unanswered points to take a 35-29 lead into the final minute of the half, but Nicholas DePatsy (Waldoboro, Maine) hit a three, and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) made one from the line and splashed a three to give the Mariners their first lead of the game as they entered halftime with a 36-35 advantage.


The two teams exchanged baskets to open up the second half, before the Beavers went on a 10-point run to take a 47-38 lead at 15:04. Maine Maritime responded with a six-point run to close the deficit to three points (47-44) at 13:10, but the Beavers scored six-straight to build a 53-44 lead.


The Mariners outscored the Beavers 8-3 to close the gap to just one (59-58) with 7:39 to play, but UMF hit back-to-back threes to take a 65-58 lead with just under six minutes to go. Adam Richardson (Bradley, Maine) and Judge picked up two points each for the Mariners to cut the Beaver lead to 65-62 at 4:19 but UMF outscored Maine Maritime 18-9 for the remainder of the game, including going 8-of-9 from the line, to hang on for the victory.


Thayer ended the evening with a game-high 24 points, while adding four assists, three rebounds, and a pair of steals. Judge added 17 points, seven rebounds, and two steals, and Newcomb chipped in with 10 points and three rebounds.


Farmington’s Witham tallied a team-high 20 points, three assists, and a rebound, Amir Moss added 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and four steals and Camire ended the evening with 14 points and a steal. Riley Robinson chipped in with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists, and a steal and Tyus Ripley rounded out the Beavers in double-digits with 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocks, and an assist.


The Mariners fall to 5-19 on the season and 2-15 in the NAC, while the Beavers improve to 11-13 overall and 10-7 in the conference. Maine Maritime will conclude their regular season on Saturday, February 18 when they host Thomas College for Senior Day at 1:00 pm.
