FARMINGTON, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women’s basketball cruised to a 68-41 victory over the University of Maine at Farmington on Thursday night, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action inside of Dearborn Gymnasium.
Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) made a free throw and a layup to open up the scoring and gave the Mariners the lead. Maine Maritime outscored the Beavers 15-7 in the first quarter and never looked back, taking a 31-18 lead into halftime.
The Mariners outscored UMF 25-19 in the third quarter and held the Beavers to just four points in the final quarter to cruise to the conference victory.
Chloe Smedley (York, Maine) led the Mariners with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds, and also added two steals and an assist. Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) also tallied 11 points, while pulling down five rebounds, one assist, one steal and a block, Ogden ended the evening with nine points and three rebounds, and Megan McLean (Eliot, Maine) added eight points, five rebounds, and an assist. Both Alex Winchester (Hampden, Maine) and Amanda Holewiak (Somerset, Mass.) added seven points.
Kennadi Grover led the Beavers with a game-high 13 points, while also pulling down five rebounds and a steal. Jenessa Talarico added added eight points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.
The Mariners improve to 13-11 overall and 9-8 in the conference, while the Beavers fall to 4-18 on the season and 4-13 in the NAC. Maine Maritime wraps up regular season play on Saturday, February 18 when they host Thomas College at 3:00 pm for Senior Day.
