JOHNSON, Vt. – Maine Maritime Academy men’s basketball fell to Johnson State College 76-61 on Friday night in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action.

The Mariners got on the board first when Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) made a jump shot at 17:59, and the two teams exchanged the lead back-and-forth until the Badgers used a 13-3 run to take a 26-15 lead at 6:22. The Badgers took a 37-24 advantage into halftime led by 11 points from both Benjamin Holl and Kawaun Chavis, while Thayer and Nicholas DePatsy(Waldoboro, Maine) led the Mariners with six points each in the first half.

The Badgers maintained a double-digit lead in the second half until the Mariners went on a 10-point run, highlighted by five points from both Nick Judge (Cushing, Maine) and Thayer, to cut the deficit to eight points (55-47) with 8:02 to play but Johnson State went an impressive 10-for-10 from the charity stripe in the final two minutes of the game to hang on for the 76-61 victory.

Thayer led the Mariners with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals, Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) added nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal and both Judge and DePatsy chipped in with eight points. Dylan Price (Madison, Maine) led the Mariners with six rebounds.

Chavis tallied 19 points to lead the Badgers, while also tallying two rebounds, two assists, and two steals, Holl ended the evening with 15 points, two steals and an assist and Marqwon Wynn added 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block. Jeyquan Johnson led Johnson State with a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Mariners fall to 4-16 overall and 1-12 in the conference, while the Badgers improve to 8-12 on the season and 5-8 in NAC play. Maine Maritime returns to actiontomorrow afternoon when they travel to take on Lyndon at 1:00 pm.
