BIDDEFORD, Maine — Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, N.J.) netted the deciding tally 4:22 into overtime to lift Massachusetts Institute of Technology over No.17 University of New England, 3-2, in a field hockey contest Saturday afternoon (Sep. 9) at the Big Blue Turf.
The match ended when a broken penalty corner play was kept alive by Rayna Higuchi (Solana Beach, Calif.) along the endline to the right of the frame, and her bouncing centering cross fell to the stick of Garofalo for a backhanded strike into the cage.
Higuchi accounted for the equalizer with under six minutes to play in regulation, tipping in a feed from Katie Notarangelo (Foxboro, Mass.). MIT had trailed for nearly 40 minutes to that point.
After the Engineers (4-0) opened the scoring in the 9th minute on a goal by Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.), assisted by Emily Penn (Columbia, Md.), the Nor’easters (1-1) answered with two in a span of 3:23 later in the period to slide in front. Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine) pocketed both from well-executed corner plays that were setup by Olivia Madore (Lyman, Maine). Brooke Lemerise (Bartlett, N.H.) also helped the initial marker with the corner insert.
Final totals for shots (11-10) and corners (10-8) favored MIT, with limited chances testing either goalie. Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.) ended with four saves on the visiting side, while Liz Sargent (South Burlington, Vt.) posted three stops for UNE.
