WATERVILLE, Maine — Hannah Hearn scored Colby College’s lone goal of the day to keep the Mules in the game early in a 4-1 loss to third-ranked Middlebury College in NESCAC field hockey Saturday at Bill Alfond Field.

The Mules(2-6 overall, 1-5 NESCAC) are back in action Sunday in a non-league home game against Husson University at 1 p.m.
Middlebury’s Lauren Schweppe scored three goals and had five of her six shots go on goal. She scored the opening goal of the game at 15:07 of the first half on hard run up the middle of the field.
The Panthers (6-1, 4-1 NESCAC) made it 2-0 on some nice stick handling by Grace Jennings. She worked her way to the middle for a shot and the ball was tipped in by Annie Leonard.
Hearn also went hard to the goal with some stick handling to cut the margin to 2-1 with just 6:50 left in the half. Her low shot went to the right corner of the cage.
Middlebury, though, scored on the first of two penalty corner goals to close out the scoring. Audrey Quirk pushed a long corner out to Caroline Knapp, who pushed the ball over to Schweppe for the blast.
The same combination made it 4-1 at 44:32 of the contest. Quirk had a shorter corner this time, but the end result was a pass from Knapp to Schweppe for the score.
Emily Buckman played the second half in goal for the Mules and had five saves. Riley Whitmyer made three saves in the first half. Colby had defensive saves from Tori Brown, Eliza Mell, and Kaleigh
