BIDDEFORD, Maine — Sarah Sinning scored with 1:04 elapsed in overtime to give Manhattanville College a 4-3 victory over the University of New England in a New England Hockey Conference women’s game played Saturday afternoon (Nov. 12) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The win improves the Valiants’ overall and conference records to 3-1-0. UNE drops to 1-4-1, 1-2-1 in NEHC action.
After sending a pass to Cassandra Kent in the right circle, Sinning headed toward the cage and received a feed across the low slot that she directed into the goal from the left doorstep.
Trailing 3-2 heading into the third, the Nor’easters forced overtime with the lone tally of the frame when Abby Kinens notched her first goal of the season with her team short-handed. Kinens intercepted a Manhattanville pass in the neutral zone before breaking in behind the defense and rattling a shot off the left post and into the goal.
UNE had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Emily Corrales’ team-leading third goal. Corrales fired a wrist shot from the mid-slot that went five-hole at 16:36 of the period.
In the second the Valiants exploded for three consecutive goals in a span 1:02 to take control. Nicole Mensi scored on the power play to tie the score (1-1) at the 7:22 mark. Katherine Reilly followed with a goal 27 seconds later, and Morgan Wilm continued the barrage with her first goal of the year at 8:24.
UNE’s Annie Mullen would tally short-handed with 1:44 remaining in the frame to help the Nor’easters halt Manhattanville’s momentum.
Caty Flagg played a strong game in goal for UNE, racking up 32 saves, including a pad save on a Mensi breakaway with six minutes left in regulation to keep the score level.
Rose Pijaca earned the victory with 13 saves for Manhattanville.
