BIDDEFORD, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men’s soccer fought to a scoreless draw with the University of New England on Friday night, in their season opener.

The Nor’easters held a significant margin in shots, 20-3, but Maine Maritime’s keeper Kyle Townsend (Hampden, Maine) was sharp in his first collegiate start, stopping all six shots that landed on net. UNE’s goalie Elijah Leverett tallied one save in net.

Dalton Moore (Hollis Center, Maine) and Evan Backus (Farmington, Maine) led the Mariners offensive attack, combining for all three shots, while Ryan Stephens took four shots, two on goal to lead UNE’s offense.

The Mariners (0-0-1) will host Maine-Fort Kent on Sunday for their home opener at 3:00 p.m. on Ritchie Field. The University of New England (0-0-1) also returns to action on Sunday at 12:00 p.m., at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.
