WENHAM, Mass. — Emily Wyman (Brockton, Mass.) scored in the 99th minute to lift Maine Maritime Academy women’s soccer over Gordon College 2-1, on Monday afternoon in non-conference action.
Lexi Potter put Gordon College on the board 19th minute when she beat a Mariner defender and snuck a ball in over the head of Maine Maritime’s keeper Maggie McConkey (Fryeburg, Maine).
The Mariners came out strong in the second half, creating chaos in front of the net in the 59th minute when Briana Obshatkin (Dedham, Mass.) beat Gordon’s goalie Kali Denty to a loose ball, sneaking the shot under the bar in the right corner, to tie things up at 1-1.
Despite a few opportunities by both teams, the game headed into overtime for the second-consecutive matchup, in as many years.
The battle continued deep into the first overtime period when Maine Maritime capitalized on a corner kick from Makayla Lewis (Purcellville, Va.) that found Wyman. Wyman volleyed the ball toward net, redirecting it off a Gordon defender and into the net for the game-winner.
McConkey and Alice Van Kovn (Lancaster, Calif.) split time in net, with Van Kovn picking up two saves. Denty tallied seven stops for the Fighting Scots in net, in the loss.
The Mariners improve to 6-5-1 on the season and head to Colby-Sawyer on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. North Atlantic Conference match. Gordon falls to 6-5-1 overall, and will host Castleton at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
