The Curry College football team used a late fourth-quarter touchdown to earn its second win of the season Saturday in a 42-41 shootout with Maine Maritime Academy of Castine in Milton, Massachusetts.
Curry improves to 2-4 and 1-3 in conference play while Maine Maritime is now 2-4 and 1-3, respectively.
The game was close throughout, as neither team led by more than one touchdown.
The Mariners took a 41-35 lead early in the fourth quarter on Corey Creeger’s fourth touchdown run of the afternoon, but Curry would forge ahead for good with just over four minutes remaining.
Quarterback Alex Corvese, who threw five touchdown passes on the day, would hook up with Jake Cawlina from 13 yards out, and the extra point provided the hosts with the winning edge.
The Mariners could not muster any points in the final four minutes.
Maine Maritime, which was led by James Ferrer’s 106 yards rushing, would get on the board first on a four-yard touchdown run by Creeger.
Curry would counter with a pair of TD throws by Corvese, and the teams went back and forth through the rest of the first half, which ended with Curry on top 28-21.
Maine Maritime would score the first 14 points of the second half, a touchdown run of five yards by Creeger (17 carries, 50 yards) and a 41-yard interception return by Trenton Bouchard.
Corvese’s fourth TD pass, a 24-yard strike to Nate Chatrand, tied it for the Gulls late in the third quarter, and a missed 2-point conversion rush after Creeger’s final TD in the fourth wound up being the difference in the game.
Creeger also passed for 54 yards for the Mariners.
Cawlina finished with 133 yards on nine receptions and two touchdowns for Curry.
