BURLINGTON, Vermont – Maine field hockey closes out their regular season with a win over the Vermont Catamounts 4-1 Sunday afternoon. Brianna Ricker scored two goals on the day to lead the Black Bears in scoring.
With the win the Black Bears finish 13-6 on the year and 6-2 in America East play, Maine is locked into the second seed of the East Division for the America East playoffs. Vermont falls to 7-12 overall and 0-8 in conference play.
Vermont opened with the first goal of the game off of a penalty corner, Isabella Sericolo gave the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead 28:41 into the first half.
The Black Bears responded with a goal of their own, as Brianna Ricker scored her first of the day set up by Casey Crowley tying the game 1-1.
Two minutes later, Maine took their first lead of the game scored by Sydney Veljacic. Casey Crowley assisted on her second goal of the game.
Maine outshot Vermont 9-3 in the first half, each team was tied at 1-1 for penalty corners.
The second half didn’t feature any scoring until there were ten minutes remaining in the game.
Riley Field gave Maine their third unanswered goal of the game, assisted by Libby Riedl as the Black Bears increased their margin, 3-1.
With less than seven minutes remaining, Brianna Ricker scored her second goal of the game, assisted by Sydney Veljacic giving Maine a 4-1 edge.
Emily Corbett finished the game with two saves in goa and earned the win to improve her record to 6-3 on the season.
The Black Bears are locked into the second seed in the East Division and will play the no. three seed from the West Division in the America East playoffs. The standings at this moment show the University of California as the third seed in the West Division. The game is scheduled for Friday, November 4 at 3:00 p.m.
