LOWELL, Mass. –UMass Lowell jumped out to an early lead and held off a comeback bid by the University of Maine baseball team for a 9-8 win on Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.
Caleb Kerbs finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one walk while Cody Pasic was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and one walk. Danny Casals had one hit that drove in two runs while Kevin Doody had one hit and one RBI while earning two walks and scoring three runs.
The River Hawks scored at least one run in each of the first four innings, including three in the first and four in the third, and held a 9-3 lead heading into the top of the fifth.
Trailing 4-0 heading into the top of the third, the Black Bears began to chip away at the deficit with three runs. After Doody reached on a fielder’s choice and Pasic walked, Casals singled them both in. Hernen Sardinas then drove in Jeremy Pena, who had been hit by a pitch.
UML (17-19, 8-7 AE) held Maine (11-25, 6-6 AE) off the board in the fourth but the Black Bears then scored in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Doody crossed the plate on an error in the fifth and in the sixth, Pasic’s double down the right field line scored Doody and Kerbs made it a 9-6 game. The Black Bears, though, left the bases loaded for the 9-6 deficit after six full innings.
Christopher Bec earned a walk to start the seventh and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice before Doody singled home Brandon Vicens.
Connor Johnson threw 3.0 innings of scoreless relief for the Black Bears, allowing just three hits, while Eddie Emerson, Jonah Normandeau and Trevor DeLaite all came out of the Maine bullpen. Nick Silva started for the Black Bears, pitching 1.2 innings while giving up four runs on six hits.
