EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Maine baseball team out-hit the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on Sunday afternoon but fell short, 7-3, in the finale game of the non-conference series at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
Maine had seven hits to UTRGV’s three, with Danny Casals collecting two while Jeremy Pena, Ben Terwilliger, Kevin Doody, Hernen Sardinas and Cody Pasic each had one.
The Black Bears didn’t waste any time in getting runners on base. Pena and Jonathan Bennett earned consecutive walks to open up and then they moved to second and third, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt by Sardinas. Unfortunately, a line drive from the next batter, Brandon Vicens, was snared by the second basemen and Bennett was doubled off.
In Maine’s at-bats in the third inning, Doody led off with a single to left and advanced on a fielder’s choice before stealing third but Chase Adams was able to shut it down again with a strikeout and fly ball.
Starter Chris Murphy had had a strong first inning on the mound, inducing a fly ball and two ground outs for a 1-2-3 inning and then followed that up with two strike outs and pop up in the bottom of the second.
After Tyler Torres reached on an error, Murphy had a strike out but then the Vaqueros pushed five across the plate before the Black Bears could register another out. A triple from Anthony Gomez highlighted the scoring barrage for UTRGV in plating three runs.
Murphy went three innings, allowing five runs – four earned – on two hits while striking out four batters in the loss. John Arel came on in the bottom of the fourth and retired the first batter he faced but UTRGV made it 6-0 after two wild pitches, two walks, a steal and hit by pitch.
Despite a diving catch by Colin Ridley in right field to get a second out, McMahon scored after tagging up to make it 7-0 heading into the fifth.
It was then Maine’s turn for the bats to come alive.
After Casals singled to lead off, Terwilliger doubled down the right field line. Doody then reached base for the second time on the day, loading the bases with a walk. Pasic’s single scored Casals. Another earned walk – this time by Pena – scored Terwilliger to make it 7-2. Bennett then drove in Doody before Adams induced a fly out to end Maine’s at-bat.
That would be the last of the scoring on the day for both teams, with Maine moving to 4-11 with the loss and UTRGV bumping to 10-7.
Zach Winn, who came on in the fourth to get the final two outs, retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth. Winn ended up going 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three. Cody Laweryson pitched two innings, allowing no hits to go with three strikeouts. Adams got the win for UTRGV in his seven innings of work in which he allowed three runs on six hits and walked four and struck out five.
Maine is back in action on Tuesday and Wednesday with games at the University of the Incarnate Word.
