FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The University of Maine softball team swept a doubleheader from Sacred Heart on Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Park. Maine took game one, 3-2, before shutting out the Pioneers in the finale, 4-0.
Maddie Decker‘s two-run shot came as part of a three-run top of the second as the Black Bears defeated Sacred Heart, 3-2, in game one.
Erin Bogdanovich picked up the win after going 4.1 innings while giving up two runs on six hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Annie Kennedy notched her second save after tossing 2.2 innings of no-hit action.
Four of the game’s five runs were scored in the second inning, with Maine jumping on the scoreboard first.
Royle started the top of the second with a single down the line in left before coming around on Decker’s homer. Laurine German kept the rally alive by working a walk before advancing to second on a single from Douglass. The bases would load up after Erika Leonard reached on a fielder’s choice before Carlson’s sac-fly to center plated German.
The Pioneers were able to tack on runs in the second and third innings but Bogdanovich, Kennedy and the Maine defense refused to surrender the lead. Maine picked up its fourth win of the year with a 3-2 final.
