DEDHAM, Mass. –The 19th-ranked UMaine field hockey defeated Northeastern 4-3 in overtime Saturday afternoon, after a game winning goal from Sydney Veljacic, her first of the season. Maine improves to 7-2 overall on the season while Northeastern falls to .500 with a 4-4 record.
Maine had four different goal scorers on the day: Samantha Wagg, Lydia Gavner, Madison Cummings and Veljacic.
Emma Cochran started in goal for the Black Bears and Becky Garner for the Huskies.
Northeastern opened with the first goal of the game, 14:55 into the first half from Jamie Bartucca her third of the season giving the Huskies an early 1-0 advantage.
Three minutes later, Samantha Wagg tied the game 1-1 after the Black Bears received a penalty corner.
The Huskies regained the lead one minute later after Laura Machlachlan scored off of a penalty corner to regain the lead, 2-1.
Danielle Aviani set up Lydia Gavner minutes later as the Black Bears tied the game once again, this time 2-2.
Maine outshot Northeastern 10-7 in the first half, the Black Bears also held the advantage in penalty corners 5-3.
14 minutes into the second half, Northeastern regained the lead for the third time in the game. Jamie Bartucca scored her second goal of the game off of a rebound to give the Huskies a 3-2 lead.
The Black Bears rallied once again and tied the game off of a Madison Cummings goal, her eleventh of the season, who cleaned up a rebound to tie the game 3-3.
Maine and Northeastern were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation.
:42 seconds into overtime, senior captain Veljacic scored the game winner, her first goal of the season. It was a backhanded shot that went into the top left corner.
