LAS CRUCES, N.M. – New Mexico State University used a three-run seventh inning to come back and top the University of Maine baseball team, 6-5, on Friday night at Presley Askew Field.
Jeremy Pena had a double and a triple on the day while Colin Ridley and Cody Pasic both finished with two hits. Danny Casals had a home run for Maine while Hernen Sardinas, Caleb Kerbs and Jonathan Bennett each had on hit.
Pena opened the game up with a triple to right field and Tristen Carranza had a single to right in the bottom of the second, but those were the only two hits of the first two frames.
In his first start of the year, Zach Winn was strong for Maine in the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits and stranding four Aggies on the bases.
The Black Bears and Aggies then traded runs in the third inning – with Pasic leading off with a single and then coming in to score on a Casals grounder to short – and then Maine plated three in the fifth to take the lead for good. Winn would wind up going 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four before giving way to Matt Geoffrion.
After Pasic singled up the middle, Pena legged out his second extra base hit of the day to land himself on second and Pasic to third. Casals then watched ball one before hitting a home run to left field to clear the bases and make it 4-1.
The Aggies added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth, but the Black Bears extended the lead back out to two. Sardinas doubled to centerfield to start the inning and then advanced to third on Caleb Kerbs’ ball to the shortstop. Ridley then smacked an 0-2 pitch up the middle to bring Sardinas around for a 5-3 lead.
NM State, though, would put three on the board in the seventh with a home run and a two-run home run – to take the lead at 6-3.
Geoffrion pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk in taking the loss. Connor Johnson pitched the eighth, retiring the side in order with two ground balls and a foul ball snagged by Sardinas.
Kyle Bradish went 6.0 innings for the Aggies to start, allowing five runs on seven hits whiles fanning nine and walking three but Chance Hroch got the win in his one inning of relief.
Maine (4-14) and NM State (10-8) will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Presley Askew Field. First pitch of the first game is set for 2:00 p.m. EST.
