SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Maine baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit to take a lead in the ninth but the University of the Incarnate Word forced extra innings and topped the Black Bears, 9-8, on Wednesday night at Sullivan Field.
Maine faced a four-run deficit after two innings but tied it up in the sixth and then overcame a two-run hole in the ninth on a Kevin Doody double to go up by one. UIW mounted its own comeback in the bottom of the ninth, though, tying it up with a double of its own before winning the four-hour affair on a walk off pass ball in the 10th.
Jeremy Pena finished with four hits, three RBIs and one run scored while Hernen Sardinas, Colin Ridley and Cody Pasic each had two hits for Maine, with Sardinas and Pasic also scoring twice. As a team, Maine had 13 hits to UIW’s 12.
Pena and Jonathan Bennett had back-to-back singles to start off the game. A pass ball and a long sacrifice fly to right-center by Danny Casals plated Pena to give Maine its first lead of the series, 1-0. But In the bottom of the first, UIW put three on the board and an inning later, Ryan Gonzalez hit a leadoff home run and then an error, stolen base and an error allowed Ridge Rogers to circle the bases for a 5-1 lead.
Pasic’s leadoff double to right in the third gave Maine some life and then Pena singled to left to score Pasic. It was déjà vu for the Black Bears in the fourth, with Pasic doubling and Pena driving him in to creep the Maine closer at 5-3.
Kevin Doody’s diving catch in left-center with two outs in the bottom half of the fourth stranded two Cardinals and kept Maine within two.
Sardinas led off the sixth with a towering ball over the fence in right field. Maine went on to load the bases and Pena notched his third RBI on the night with a dribbler up the first base foul line that scored Ridley. Maine (4-13) loaded the bases in the eighth but the UIW (13-6) pitching staff escaped the jam and the Cardinals then scored on a pass ball for a seventh run. Maine would strand 11 runners in the game while UIW left 10 on.
The Black Bears loaded the bases again in the ninth and Kerbs sent a sacrifice to center, scoring Casals. Two batters later, Doody lofted the ball down the left field line to score Sardinas and Brandon Vicens and give Maine the 8-7 lead. UIW’s own double in the ninth would tie it at 8-8, and then Rogers once again circled the bases and scored on a pass ball for the win.
Trevor DeLaite went 2.2 innings in relief, allowing one earned run on three hits with three strikeouts while Eddie Emerson went 2.0 innings, giving up no runs and one hit. In 2.0 innings of work, Connor Johnson allowed one run on two hits and in 1.0 inning. Nick Silva allowed two runs on two hits in 2.0 innings of work while Ben Terwilliger took the loss in allowing one hit and one unearned run. Peter Kemble gave up three runs on three hits in his first career start.
Maine will now head to New Mexico State University this weekend for four games with the Aggies.
