PHOENIX, Ariz. — The University of Maine softball team split a doubleheader with Grand Canyon University and Creighton on Saturday afternoon. The Black Bears defeated GCU 4-0 in game one before falling by a score of 5-2 to Creighton.

Maddie Decker led the offense on the day, going 5-for-8 on the day with two RBIs and a run scored.

In game one, Molly Flowers tossed a three hit shutout to pick up her first victory of the season. Flowers struck out two over 5.0 innings of work. Offensively, Decker went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while Felicia Lennon and Alyssa Derrick each added two hits. Derrick blasted her first home run of the season, finishing the game with three RBI.

Maine jumped out to a quick start in game one with a pair of runs in the top of the first. With the bases loaded, Derrick’s single up the middle brought in Decker and Felicia Lennon, giving Maine the early 2-0 edge.

The Black Bears tacked on a run in the top of the fourth on Derrick’s solo home run.

Decker’s 0-2 single up the middle in the seventh plated Rachel Carlson with a fourth insurance run. Erin Bogdanovich and the defense shut down the Lopes in the bottom of the seventh as the Black Bears handed GCU just its second loss and its first 18 games. For Bogdanovich, it was her first save of the season after giving up just one hit and fanning one over the final 2.0 innings.

In game two, Maine could not overcome one bad inning after allowing five runs to the Blue Jays in the top of the second. Decker powered the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Erika Leonard added a pair of hits and scored the lone Maine run.

Creighton jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings with a big top of the second. With the bases loaded and one out, Jayci McGill’s bases loaded single through the right side plated a pair. Anna O’Gorman drove in two more with another single through the right side. The Blue Jays tacked on their fifth run of the day when Allie Reinhart’s single up the middle brought in O’Gorman.

The Black Bears were able to get on the board in the fifth when Leonard singled and eventually advanced to third before scoring on Decker’s single up the middle.

But it would be as close as Maine would get, failing to the Blue Jays by a score of 5-1.

Bodanovich took the tough loss in the circle for Maine after giving up five runs on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work. Bogdanovich struck out a pair in her second start of the season. Annie Kennedy provided 4.0 innings of shutout relief, scattering three hits.
