WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men’s basketball team secured a 76-55 win on Tuesday night, defeating the University of Maine Black Bears at Capital One Arena. It was the fourth-straight game the Hoyas have had five players in double figures as the Blue & Gray improves to 5-0 on the season while Maine slips to 1-6 on the year.

Three familiar faces led the Hoyas as the junior trio of Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School), Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) and Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) were GU’s top three scorers. Johnson led the way with 18 points while Govan and Derrickson chipped in 16 and 12, respectively. Freshman Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) provided 11 points while senior Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La./Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) finished with 10 points, his third double-digit performance in as many games. Govan led the way with eight rebounds while Mulmore’s five assists were a squad best.

“It shows our unselfishness as a team,” Johnson said of the balanced scoring effort. “It’s a good thing to have five different players in double figures. We’re spreading the wealth around.”

Georgetown shot 46.3 percent for the game and held Maine to 36.7 percent shooting from the floor. GU outrebounded Maine, 36-35, and forced 18 Black Bear turnovers while committing just 12 of its own. The Hoyas managed 22 points on free throws, shooting at a 75.9 percent clip from the charity stripe.

The Hoyas opened the game on an 11-2 run behind a pair of jumpers from Mulmore and a jumper and trey from Johnson, prompting Maine to call a timeout with 16:11 on the clock. Georgetown made the most of its offensive rebounds, including a tip in from Govan followed by a free throw from freshman Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) to give the Hoyas a double-digit lead, 16-6. Georgetown maintained a double-digit lead through the remainder of the frame, taking a 40-24 lead going into the break as Johnson closed the stanza with 10 points to lead the Blue & Gray.

Derrickson was the first Hoya to put points on the board in the second, securing a layup to extend the lead to 42-28. After a slow start to the half from both teams, Govan sparked the offense with a quick five points as he drained a 3-pointer, then managed a steal and closed it off with a dunk to extend the lead to 17, 47-30.

The Black Bears gained some momentum and scored eight of the next nine points, but a Govan layup stopped the run. Capped by the second trey of the night from Blair, the Hoyas went on a 17-6 run to take the 65-44 edge with 7:16 left in the game. The Blue & Gray maintained a 20-point lead for nearly the final five minutes of regulation, but Maine hit its fourth 3-pointer of the game to cut it to 19, 74-55, with 1:39 to play. A nice move to the basket for a layup from graduate student Trey Dickerson (Queens, N.Y./God’s Academy [Texas]/South Dakota) sealed the win for Georgetown, 76-55.

Maine’s Aaron Calixte led the Black Bears in scoring with 17 points.
