CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Black Bears struggled to gain their footing on the ice on Saturday afternoon, as they fell to the Boston College Eagles, 7-2.
The Eagles (6-0-1, 3-0-1 WHEA) took full advantage of an early penalty on Maine(5-4-0, 1-2-0 WHEA), as Daryl Watts skated the puck up the side of the rink and passed it just in front of Maine’s defenders where Makenna Newkirk met the puck directly in front of the goal, and one-timed it right into the back of the net. Serena Sommerfield also earned an assist, helping BC open up the match 1-0, 4:23 into the first frame.
Just two minutes later, BC saw back-to-back goals first by Toni Ann Miano deking out a defender, then sneaking the puck just inside the corner of the net. Assists were handed out to Caitrin Lonergan and Willow Corson. Less than a minute later, Ryan Little chased after a shot by Erin Connolly (assist) which was deflected away by goaltender Loryn Porter. Little tapped the puck off the post and into the net behind Porter. Little netted her first goal of the year while Connolly grabbed her first assist, and Caroline Rose helped out with the secondary assist.
Carly Jackson entered into the game with 11:35 remaining in the first period to help out the Black Bears. Before leaving the ice, Porter tallied seven saves. Jackson stood strong alongside her defense escaping a 5-3 BC power play with 7:10 to go.
The Eagles closed out the first frame with a 4-0 lead after a goal by the dynamic duo, Watts following up on a saved shot from Lonergan. Willow Corson also recorded an assist on the goal.
Watts found the back of the net again in the beginning of the second period with assists given to Newkirk and Delaney Belinskas for her first assist of the season. Just one minute later, Maegan Beres gets her body behind a pass directly in front of Jackson in net to deflect it in. Passes came from Connolly and Little to add onto their points that afternoon.
Lydia Murray crashes the net finding it perfectly open after BC goaltender Katie Burt stepped up to save a deep shot ripped in by Brittany Kucera. Murray earned her third goal of the season and helped put the Black Bears back in the game cutting the point deficit to 6-1 with 13:55 on the clock in the second period. Cailey Hutchison helped clear the puck out to Kucera for an assist.
Lonergan and Watts both earned their third point of the day with Lonergan’s goal at 10:36 into the final frame. Belinskas recorded a pair of assists on the day.
The Black Bears closed out the scoring on the day, after a scrum occurred in front of the Eagles’ net. A BC defender attempted to clear the puck out, but it ricocheted off one of her teammates bouncing directly in front of Catherine Tufts who tucked the puck into the side of the net. Brooke Stacey and Tereza Vanisova picked assists on the final goal of the match as the Black Bears fell 7-2.
In between the posts, Jackson registered 25 saves while across the ice, Burt stopped 12 shots.
Maine women’s ice hockey will be back on the road next weekend for a two-game series at Dartmouth starting on Saturday, November 4 at 2 p.m.
