STANDISH, Maine – Freshman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored twice to help lift Saint Joseph’s College (3-3, 2-1 GNAC) past Lasell College (6-3, 1-1 GNAC), 2-1 in overtime, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference field hockey contest on a cloudy Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
Pomerleau netted her sixth goal – and third game-winner in as many SJC victories – 4:24 into the extra play, as the freshman hustled to the left post, handled a thread-the-needle pass from junior Elyse Caiazzo that eluded the Lasell goalie, and tapped the ball into an empty cage for the dramatic finish.
Pomerleau put the Monks on the board in the 15th minute when she received a right-to-left cross from senior Kelsey Dumond near the goalmouth and slammed her own rebound into the cage. The Lasers answered when junior Erica Connors blasted a shot to the lower left sector of the cage, off a pass from freshman Samantha Taylor , on a perfectly executed penalty corner with just 16 seconds left in the first half.
Saint Joseph’s held a 20-3 shots advantage in the narrow victory but Lasell junior keeper Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.) kept the scoring to a minimum with 13 stops, several of the highlight reel variety, in a losing effort.
