STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (6-3, 4-0 GNAC) blanked Johnson & Wales University (2-6, 1-3 GNAC), 2-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.
The Monks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when sophomore Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) netted her team-leading ninth goal of the season off a Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) pass. Beaulieu delivered a lead pass through traffic to her sophomore teammate, who finished the play with a flick past Wildcats keeper Claire Nolan (West Bridgewater, Mass.).
St. Joe’s doubled the lead 3:50 into the second stanza when freshman Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) took a shot that was stopped and junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) cleaned up the rebound with her third marker of the year.
Saint Joseph’s junior goalie Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) recorded four saves to tally her fourth shutout of the season and 17th of her career. Nolan notched four stops in a losing effort for the Wildcats.
Saint Joseph’s held an advantage in shots (11-6), shots on goal (7-4), and penalty corners (8-6).
With the victory, Saint Joseph’s improves to 4-1 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University and avenges a 2-1 loss at the hands of the Wildcats last season.
