CASTINE, Maine – Junior guard Kenzie Worcester became the fastest Husson University women’s basketball player to surpass 1,000 career points Saturday as the Eagles defeated Maine Maritime Academy 69-61.
The former Washburn District High School star scored a career-high 36 points against the Mariners to reach 1,000 points in just 66 collegiate games.
Worcester made a school-record 20 of 23 free throws during the game en route to the fourth-highest single-game scoring output in the program’s history. Husson also made a school team-record 33 free throws (in 43 attempts) during the North Atlantic Conference contest.
The game was tied entering the fourth quarter before Husson (5-5 overall, 4-1 in NAC play) outscored MMA (5-5, 2-3 NAC) 10-2 to build a 59-52 lead with 3:31 remaining.
Alayne Felix led Maine Maritime with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Melinda Ogden added 16 points and four boards.
Sami Ireland added 13 points and eight rebounds for Husson while Joan Overman also contributed under the hoop, snatching up eight boards to go with three assists and three steals.
