BANGOR, Maine – The Husson University baseball team (9-7) split their home doubleheader with Maine-Farmington (2-7) on Monday afternoon. The Eagles won the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 6-5 and lost the second 5-2.
Game 2: Maine-Farmington 5, Husson 2
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Ryan Rebar and Sam Huston manufactured a run for the Eagles. Rebar lined a single into right field then stole second base. Huston blooped a double into right field that scored Rebar and gave Husson a 1-0 lead after the 1st.
Christian Corneil led off the fourth inning with a single over the shortstop’s head. He then proceeded to get himself into scoring position by stealing second base. Matt Smith did his job by sending a seeing eye single up the middle and scoring Corneil from second. The Eagles held onto a 2-0 lead after 4 innings.
In the top of the 6th inning, Farmington mounted a small comeback. Chad Snowman started the inning with a single. He was cut down by a fielder’s choice that Derek Bowen reached on. Riley Chickering and Mark Leahy followed with singles that loaded the bases. Tyler Flayhan lifted a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Bowen from third. The Beavers trailed 2-1 after the 6th inning.
With two outs in the top of the 7th, Jordan Corteau drew a walk. Chad Snowman singled on the next pitch. Corteau advanced to third on the hit. Derek Bowen, after multiple foul balls, singled home Corteau tying the game at 2-2. Riley Chickering walked to extend the inning. Mark Leahy gave his squad a 4-2 lead with a single through the right side. Bowen and Snowman scored on the single. Chickering scored on a throwing error by Rogerson. Farmington would hold onto the 5-2 lead for their second win of the season.
Jesse Colford got the nod for Game 2, and he did not disappoint. Colford went 6.0 innings, allowed one run, and struck out six. Dustin Smith (0-1) got the loss by allowing four (three earned) runs in the top of the 7th. Sam Huston and Matt Smith had the two RBI, while Christian Corneil had two hits. Ryan Rebar and Cam Archer each tossed in one hit in the loss.
Nate Pushard started the game for Farmington while going 4.0 innings, allowing two runs, and striking out seven. Ryan Pratt (1-1) picked up the win by throwing 2.0 scoreless innings. Chad Snowman got the save by closing the door on the 7th inning. Mark Leahy paced the Beaver offense with two RBI. Derek Bowen and Tyler Flayhan had the other two RBI. Croteau and Snowman each contributed two hits in the win.
