St. Lawrence Women's college basketball 62 vs Husson 42

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The St. Lawrence University Saints (1-1) shook off a slow start and 8-2 deficit to ring up a 62-42 win over the Husson University Eagles (0-1) in a game played at Williams College in the Ephs’ Tip-Off Tournament.

A Sarah Bragg free throw midway through the final quarter brought Husson to within eight points down 48-40, but St. Lawrence answered with a three and a two-point hoop from Marlee Gunn and topped off the run with a three from Jenny Scudder and the Saints led 56-40 with 3:10 to play.

Both offenses picked up in the third quarter with Husson tallying 18 points and St. Lawrence scoring 17.

Jordan Butler’s three pointer with 4:42 left in the third quarter drew the Husson Eagles to within one, down 35-34, however St. Lawrence answered with a layup by Katie Gallagher, a three from Jenny Scudder, and a jumper from Marlee Gunn to build an eight point lead with 1:18 left in the quarter. The Saints took an eight-point lead into the final quarter, 42-34.

A Megan Peach layup with 3:32 left in the first quarter gave Husson an early six point lead, but St. Lawrence responded with the basket by St. Lawrence’s Jenny Scudder put the Saints on top 9-8. The Scudder three-point basket was soon followed by one from Cara Waterson and the Saints owned a four-point lead at 12-8.

St. Lawrence expanded their lead to 13, 25-12 on a free throw by Annabelle Pugliese with 1:16 left in the first half.

Husson cut the St. Lawrence lead to nine at the break, 25-16 on two hoops from Kenzie Worcester.

Cold shooting plagued both the teams in the first half with Husson making just seven of 29 shots from the floor (24.1%) and St. Lawrence 10 of 29 for 34.5%.

St. Lawrence was plus seven on the boards in the first half 25-18 and the Saints’ Kate Frederick was tops with six.

Worcester and Peach led Husson in scoring with six points each and the Saints ewer led by Jenny Scudder who tallied five points.

St. Lawrence earned the win overcoming 21 turnovers, by owning the glass, 48-31.

Megan Peach led Husson with 10 points. Three St. Lawrence players notched double figures. Kaelyn Kohlasch and Jenny Scudder netted 13 each and Marless Gunn tallied 12.

St. Lawrence’s Katie Frederick earned All-Tourney honors.
