Springfield College field hockey 4 vs Husson

Springfield, Mass.  The Husson University field hockey team was defeated by Springfield College, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field. With the loss, Husson suffers its first setback of the season and is now 2-1.

Mikayla Toth and Lauren Russell handled the scoring for the Eagles, while Arika Brochu had the lone assist. The Pride received a two-goal effort from senior Dani Sweet, as Amanda Nusbaum posted four points on the afternoon, finishing with a goal and two assists. In net for Springfield College, junior goalkeeper Emmalie Drakefinished with eight saves, while her counterpart, Anne Marie Provencal (Skowhegan, Maine) finished with eight stops of her own.

Springfield College finished the game with a 16-11 advantage in shots, while it was also awarded 11 penalty corners to the Eagles’ eight.

It took 10:20 to open the game’s scoring for Springfield as Belle Copponi registered an unassisted strike to give Springfield College a 1-0 lead, before the Eagles pulled even when Mikayla Toth (Skowhegan, Maine) hauled in a pass from Arika Brochu (Augusta, Maine) and tucked a shot past Emmalie Drake to knot the game at one apiece.

Just 4:51 later, Springfield College took its one-goal lead back when Amanda Nusbaum set up Dani Sweet for her first of the game to give the Pride a 2-1 lead with 11:16 to play in the first half, before Springfield pushed its lead to two when Nusbaum scored unassisted with 9:12 to play in the stanza.

Opening up the second half, Husson pulled to within one as Lauren Russell (Saco, Maine) scored unassisted with 30:47 to play, but 1:45 later, Nusbaum found Sweet for the duo’s second connection of the day to seal the 4-2 win for Springfield.
