CLERMONT, Fla. – The Husson softball team split their first doubleheader of the 2017 season with a 10-2 win over Saint Elizabeth to start off the morning. The Eagles then fell to Concordia-Moorhead, 9-7, who already had nine games under their belt so far this season to Husson’s two games. After the Cobbers rallied in the final two innings scoring their only runs, the Eagles struggled to get players on base in the bottom of the seventh to make a comeback.
Game 2: Concordia-Moorhead 9, Husson 7
Husson (1-2) was first to strike in the matchup against Concordia-Moorhead (4-6) with a big triple by Olivia Smith. Casey Lopes came in clutch with a sacrifice fly helping Smith run home to close out the second ending with the Eagles up 1-0.
The Eagles saw a quick 1-2-3 outs in the top of the fourth with superior fielding, while holding the Cobbers scoreless.
Husson’s pitcher, Jen Jones was all warmed up by the fifth inning, claiming all three outs in strikeouts.
Scoring really picked up in the bottom of the fifth, as Arika Brochu stepped up to the plate with bases loaded and continued the attack with a double out to left center, scoring Andrade and Bires. Smith approached the plate for the second time, smacking a sacrifice fly to bring in Gorey for the third run of the inning.
Concordia-Moorhead entered into the competition outscoring Husson in the sixth inning 5-3. Madi Veith commenced the scoring action with a hard triple to right center, scoring Sydney Roberts for an RBI. Lexi Olek followed suit with a single right up the middle of the field, sending Veith home. A couple batters later, and Madison Little displayed a crucial at bat for the Cobbers smacking a triple out to center field with the bases loaded, gaining three RBI’s.
The Eagles answered scoring three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to put themselves back on top 7-5. Morgan Coleman sacrifice flied Brochu in who was pinch running for Kylie Kennedy who got on base by a single. Chloe Gorey then scored the next two RBI’s with the first home run of the 2017 season for the Eagles.
The Cobbers then replied in the top of the seventh, scoring an additional four runs to reclaim the lead. Olivia Stockinger advanced all runners with a groundout to second which helped score Brooke Swarthout. Immediately after, Olivia Lien added on a double for two RBI’s. Capturing the final RBI of the game was Madison Little hitting in Taylor Rasmussen with a hard single to left, taking the close 9-7 win.
Winning pitcher, Abigail Haraldson for Concordia-Moorhead, showed four strikeouts to Husson’s pitcher, Jen Jones, who struck out eight players.
Little led her team offensively going 4-for-5 with four RBI’s and a triple. Her teammate, Veith, also contributed a triple. Also helping out her team, Roberts went 2-for-3 including a double while Rasumussen hit two sacrifice flies for two RBI’s.
For the Eagles, Gorey led her team hitting 2-for-3 with a huge homer to snag two RBI’s. Other big hitters for Husson were Brochu with a double and two RBI’s and Smith with a triple, two sacrifices, and one RBI. Andrade was the only player to successfully steal a base that morning.
