BANGOR, Maine — First-year Caroline Bass tallied five hits over the course of two games and the Bates softball team split a doubleheader with Husson on Monday, dropping game one 10-5 before bouncing back to win game two 6-0.
Bates (17-13) is now one victory away from matching the program record for wins in a season.
Game Two: Bates 6, Husson 0
First-year Payton Buxton tossed a complete game two-hitter and the Bobcats blanked the Eagles 6-0 in game two of Monday’s doubleheader.
Buxton (Middlebury, Vt.) walked one and struck out seven in the shutout. She no-hit Husson over the final five innings of action, retiring eight batters in a row to end the game.
Meanwhile Bates scored three in the third off Husson starter Tamara Aunchman and never looked back.
Bass walked and stole second to start the frame. One out later, Panepinto tripled her home. Then senior Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) drew a walk and stole second base. Collette singled Panepinto in and Buxton drove in Ahlholm with an RBI groundout.
The Bobcats added two more in the fourth. First-year Abra Kaplan (Oak Park, Ill.) reached on an error, Russo singled and Panepinto walked to load the bases with two outs. Ahlholm also reached on an error and two runs scored to put Bates up 5-0.
The Eagles committed four errors in the game, three of them in the fourth inning. Bates did not commit any errors.
Bates added an insurance run in the fifth. Sophomore India Woolmington (New York, N.Y.) singled to start the inning and with one out first-year Dulce Alcantara (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) drew a walk. Bass bunted her away aboard to load the bases and Russo reached on a fielder’s choice, driving in Woolmington.
Bass, Russo and Collette all went 2-4 at the plate in game two, with Bass scoring two runs.
