BANGOR, Maine — First-year Caroline Bass tallied five hits over the course of two games and the Bates softball team split a doubleheader with Husson on Monday, dropping game one 10-5 before bouncing back to win game two 6-0.

Bates (17-13) is now one victory away from matching the program record for wins in a season. The Bobcats wrap up the regular season with a three-game series against Colby that begins Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Lafayette Street Field. After Monday’s games, Bass (Newton, Mass.) ranks second in the NESCAC in batting average (.446) and OBP (.500).

Game One: Husson 10, Bates 5

Olivia Smith tossed a complete game, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits to lead the Eagles to victory in game one of Monday’s doubleheader. Meanwhile the Bobcats suffered some tough luck in the first inning.

Bass singled to lead off the frame and promptly stole second base. A ground out moved her to third and sophomore Kirsten Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) singled her home to put Bates up 1-0. Unfortunately Pelletier got injured on the play and had to be taken out of the game. The Bobcat ace was slated to start in the circle but ended up not getting the chance.

First-year Jevan Sandhu (Plymouth, N.H.) pitched all six innings instead for Bates, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits.

A Morgan Coleman two-run home run put Husson up 2-1 after one inning of action. Bates rallied to tie the game in the top of the second. With one out, first-year Erin Murphy (North Andover, Mass.) reached on an error. Then with two away, Bass singled her to third and junior Andrea Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) reached on an error as well, allowing Murphy to cross the plate and tie the score at two.

Sandhu (2-1) shut down Husson in the bottom of the second but the Eagles scored three times in the third inning to take the lead for good. Coleman tallied an RBI single and Paige Veilleux-Adams singled home a pair to put the Eagles up 5-2.

Olivia Smith homered in the fourth and the Eagles tacked on three more in the fifth to extend the lead to 9-2.

With one away in the top of the sixth, first-year Mary Collette (Watertown, Conn.) doubled in sophomore Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) for the Bobcats’ third run of the game.

After Husson scored again to go up 10-3, the Bobcats scored twice in the seventh but could not come all the way back. Senior captain Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) singled through the right side to start the frame. She stole second and Bass drew a walk. Russo grounded out, moving both runners over and a pair of wild pitches allowed both of them to score.

Sandhu drew a walk but a double play ended the game.

Coleman paced the Eagles by going 4-4 at the plate in game one with two runs scored and three runs batted in.
