Maine College Softball 8 vs Hartford 4

West Hartford, Conn. — The University of Maine softball team exploded for 14 hits as it completed the weekend sweep of Hartford with an 8-4 victory on Sunday afternoon. Maine, which has now won 11 in a row over Hartford, ran its current season win streak to five as it starts America East action 3-0.

Rachel Carlson, Rachel Harvey and Sarah Coyne each tallied three hits to pace the offense. Harvey drove in three runs while Erika Leonard came across to score three runs of her own.

Annie Kennedy picked up her third win of the season after tossing 4.2 inning and giving up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Molly Flowers added 2.1 innings of work, surrendering just one run on one hit with four strikeouts.

Maine grabbed the lead first with a run in the bottom of the first. The Black Bears loaded the bases with three-straight bunt singles from Leonard, Carlson and Harvey. Leonard gave Maine the lead when she came across to score on Alyssa Derrick‘s sacrifice fly to left. The RBI was Derrick’s fifth of the weekend.

Two more runs came around for Maine in the second. The bunting success continued for the Black Bears as Coyne reached on a bunt single to begin the rally. After a walk from Leonard, the pair of base runners moved to second and third on a Carlson groundout. Harvey’s two-RBI double gave Maine a 3-0 lead.

The advantage stretched to 7-0 as Maine was able to bring in four runs in the third, all coming with two outs. Royle’s solo home run, her third homer of the spring, extended the lead to 4-0. The inning continued With singles by German and Coyne before Leonard drew another walk, loading the bases. Carlson snuck a single through the left side which plated Coyne and German. Maine’s lead reached 7-0 when Harvey notched her sixth hit of the weekend, an RBI single to left, scoring Leonard.

Hartford chipped away at the Maine lead, bringing in three runs in the top of the fifth.

However, Maine responded with a single run in the bottom of the frame. Carlson reached with yet another bunt single for the Black Bears and later stole second. Kristen Niland singled to left and advanced to second on an error which allowed Carlson to score, giving Maine an 8-3 lead.

Hartford added a run in the top of the seventh but would not get any closer as the Black Bears completed the weekend sweep, 8-4.

Maine continues America East action with a midweek doubleheader at UMass Lowell. Maine and the River Hawks will meet on Wednesday, April 12 with the first game starting at 2 p.m.
