At Freeport on Saturday, in a rematch of last year’s Western Maine Class D final, Matt DiAngelo scored a hat trick and assisted on the game winning goal in double-overtime to help the No. 4 Greenville Lakers edge the No. 1 Breakers of Pine Tree Academy.
The Lakers were first to score when DiAngelo found the net on an indirect kick after a Trevor Richards touch for the first half’s only goal. The Breakers got things evened up just 2 minutes into the second half on a loose ball that Javal Stewart picked up in front of the net. Greenville’s DiAngelo responded about 10 minutes later when he finished on a through ball from Evan Sullivan. It was Pine Tree’s turn to bounce back and they evened the score a minute later when Chris Wilday scored off an Andrew Alvarez pass. The Breakers then took the lead for the first time in the game when Andrew Goorhuis headed in a corner from Bosung Gong.
DiAngelo tied the game with 16 minutes in regulation by volleying a rocket from about 25 yards out.
Both teams had excellent chances in the first overtime with DiAngelo hitting the upright on a header and Goorhuis heading one just wide. The game ended 3 minutes into the second overtime when DiAngelo carried the ball deep into the end on the left corner and fired a cross to a wide open Nick Foley who was sprinting to center. Foley redirected to the back of the net to end the game.
Greenville goalie Howie Stone made 6 saves on 9 shots. Pine Tree Academy’s Ryan Pierce had 2 saves on 6 shots for the Breakers.
The Lakers improve to 12-3-1 while Pine Tree ends it’s season 14-2.
