WATERVILLE, ME – The Thomas College women’s basketball team defeated North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponent Green Mountain, 60-42, on Friday night.
The Terriers improve their record to 4-2 (1-1 NAC) in the victory while the Eagles are held winless at 0-3 (0-2 NAC).
The Terriers opened to a six-point lead in the middle of the first quarter with layups by Jordan Turner (Casco, Maine / Lake Region) and Tess McClenahan (Salmon, Idaho / Salmon). The Terriers shot 5-for-19 in the first quarter but the defense held the Eagles to just four points.
In the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, Abigail Nielsen (North Yarmouth, Maine / Yarmouth) added a three-pointer while Sammie Griffin (Union, Maine / Medomak Valley) added another with eight minutes remaining in the half, bringing the Terriers ahead 16-7.
The Terriers continued to increase their lead with the help of freshman forward Karli Stubbs (Auburn, Maine / Edward Little) who added 10 points in the last five minutes of the first half. Thomas held a 32-19 advantage going into the break.
Three, third quarter layups from Malorie Weaver (Palermo, Maine / Erskine Academy) kept the Terriers ahead 44-30 going into the final frame.
After a steal by Turner, Kelly Macomber (West Gardiner, Maine / Gardiner) completed a layup to push the Terrier lead to 15 with 5:05 left in the game. The Terriers held on to finish the scoring at 60-42.
Leading Thomas’ offense was Stubbs with 12 points and six boards while Turner added 10 points and seven rebounds. Also contributing the Terrier’s win was Nielsen with eight points and six rebounds while Weaver finished with eight points.
The Eagles were led by Mercedes Rideout with 13 points and Suzanna Moses with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Terriers will host Castleton in a NAC contest on Saturday, December 3 at 3:00p.m. in Larry Mahaney Gymnasium.
