BANGOR, MAINE – The Husson University men’s basketball team (15-4, 11-1 NAC) defeated Green Mountain (6-10, 4-7 NAC) 95-73 in a conference play Saturday afternoon in Newman Gymnasium.
In the opening minutes of the half, Husson and Green Mountain went bucket for bucket. Both sides sinking threes of their own kept the score close with it being 21-15 midway through the first half. Mitch Worcester sunk a deep three at the midpoint prompting Green Mountain to take their first timeout. Husson continued to play tough defense getting multiple steals and forcing turnovers late in the first half going on a 10-0 run to make the score 28-17 with 8:20 left to play.
In the final minutes before the half, Justin Martin drove into the paint drawing the foul putting Green Mountain past the limit, allowing Martin to sink 2 foul shots. Husson continues to love the shot from beyond the arc as the team sunk five threes giving them the 41-33 lead going into halftime.
Freshman Justin Thompson started the second half strong for the Eagles as he scored 7 straight points within the first three minutes. Husson used an 8-0 run midway through the second half boosting their lead by 15 points with 10:09 left to play in the game. Green Mountain’s Sean Leflore was given a technical foul with just under 10 minutes to play allowing Husson’s Raheem Anderson to sink both technical free throws.
Going into the final five minutes of the half Husson extended their lead to 21 after Freshman DJ Bussey sunk two foul shots. Husson continued to slowly add to their lead throughout the final minutes of the second half. Thompson continued to dominate the key while Worcester drew a charge at the other end. Freshman Cole Thomas continued to draw fouls by driving to the basket taking four trips to the free throw line.
Freshman guard Justin Thompson dropped 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 2 steals.
Senior guard Raheem Anderson added 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
Senior guard Mitch Worcester tallied 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists.
LEADERS – GREEN MOUNTAIN:
Junior De Shaun Carr added 12 points and 3 rebounds.
Junior Matt Hess scored 9 points, and 10 rebounds.
Freshman Duane Goodman Jr. had 11 points, 1 assist, and 5 rebounds.
Husson led Green Mountain in rebounds (49-41), steals (7-3), and field goal percentage (43.8%-38.2%)
The Eagles head out to take on conference opponent New England College Pilgrims on February 2nd.
