BIDDEFORD, Maine — The University of New England finished with a 26-0 advantage in shots and put a trio into the back of the net for a 3-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey triumph over Gordon College on Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 26) at the Big Blue Turf.
After seeing their six-game win streak end last night at the hands of a nationally-ranked opponent, the Nor’easters (16-3) took care of yet another league foe to reach 11-0 in conference action. UNE will look to close out an unblemished regular-season on Friday (6 p.m.) at Nichols College (0-10 CCC), before hosting the CCC tournament next week.
Big Blue has emerged victorious from the last six meetings with the Fighting Scots, who fall back to 7-11 overall and 4-7 in the CCC.
UNE capitalized on its second opf 16 penalty corners — just over three minutes into the contest — as Hannah Buckley (Leominster, Mass.) knocked a deflected pass out of mid-air for her eighth goal of the season. Marge Gardiner (East Northport, N.Y.) registered an assist on the play.
Nicole Matarozzo (Wolfeboro, N.H.) doubled the lead in the moments prior to halftime, as she collected a deflected pass from Olivia Madore (Lyman, Maine) and slipped home her 16th tally of the year.
In the 49th minute, Gardiner notched her fifth marker of the campaign by hitting the back board with a drive that was setup by Matarozzo.
Holly Smith (Peabody, Mass.) did have to entertain a pair of early-2nd half corners from Gordon, but neither forced her into action. She shared the shutout with Nicole Schena (Andover, Mass.), who entered for the final 15 minutes.
For the Fighting Scots, Shannon Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) did well to keep her side close, totaling 15 saves.
