|Gordon College||Colby College|
WATERVILLE, Maine — Josh Beveridge scored 6:16 into the game and the goal stood up as Gordon College hung on for a 1-0 non-conference victory over Colby College on Tuesday at the Colby Soccer Field.
The Fighting Scots improved to 5-4 overall, while the Mules fell to 3-3-1.
Gordon came out strong and had three corner kicks in the opening 2:31 of play. The Fighting Scots had five of their six corners in the first 12:13 of the contest.
With the sustained early pressure, Gordon got the lone goal it would need when David Cochran beat a Mule defender on the left side near the end line. Cochran pushed a centering pass back to Noah Craig, who one-timed a pass to his right to Beveridge for the score.
The Fighting Scots had an 11-8 advantage in shots and a tight 6-5 margin in corner kicks. The Mules had four of their five corners in the second half.
Wesley Sprague stopped four shots for the shutout. He also did a good job of picking off centering passes.
Colby back Chandler Smith kept his team in the game with two defensive saves in the second half. Within three minutes of each other, Smith twice made clears off the goal line.
Stanley Clarke played the first half for the Mules and stopped four shots, while Dan Carlson had two saves in the second half.
