At Newport, Hunter Smith scored on a 57-yard run as time expired as Foxcroft Academy rallied to defeat Nokomis.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for the 5-3 Ponies, who will be seeded fourth for next weekend’s Eastern Maine C playoffs and will host No. 5 Belfast, also 5-3. Foxcroft defeated the Lions 28-27 during their regular-season meeting.
Nokomis finishes its season at 3-5.
Smith, a sophomore wide receiver who was moved to quarterback to replaced injured senior Hunter Law, and the Ponies got the ball back at the Foxcroft 26-yard line with 39 seconds left. A 17-yard third-down run by Smith moved the ball to the 43, and after he spiked the ball to stop the clock with nine seconds left he raced 57 yards to the end zone to tie the game on the next play.
Smith then rushed for the two-point conversion to give the Ponies the victory.
Smith finished with 129 rushing yards on 23 carries, while Peter Boyer added 65 yards on 18 tries.
Nokomis had taken a 6-0 lead in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Dominic Erickson to Ray Girror.
Erickson completed 5 of 12 passes for 78 yards, while Noah Kershner rushed for 91 yards on 24 tries and Dylan Thibodeau added 51 yards on 15 carries.
