BANGOR, Maine — Jesse Colford and Noah Missbrenner combined on a three-hit shutout on Wednesday, leading Bangor Coffee News to a 4-0 victory over Fayette Staples Post of Saco in the opening game of the American Legion baseball state tournament at Winkin Complex on the Husson University campus.
Colford blanked Fayette Staples on two hits over 6 2/3 innings and struck out 15 along the way. Missbrenner allowed only one hit in his 2 1/3 innings and struck out two. The duo did not walk a batter.
Coffee News, the Zone 1 champion, faces the winner of Wednesday’s game between Bessey Motors of South Paris and Coastal Landscape of Portland in Thursday’s 4 p.m. contest. Zone 4 runner-up Fayette-Staples awaits the Bessey-Coastal loser on Thursday at 10 a.m.
The Comrades scored all four runs in the fifth inning against losing pitcher Zack Ham. Colford ignited the rally with a single, Zach Murray singled with one out and Tyler Parke walked to load the bases.
Ham hit Ethan Stoddard with a pitch to force in the first run, then walked Zach Cowperthwaite to make it 2-0. Missbrenner followed with a two-run single through the middle.
Jake LaPlume, Brady Lambert and Toby Pydych singled for Fayette-Staples. Ham allowed four hits and four runs with eight strikeouts and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
