LEWISTON, Maine — The Bates College field hockey team snapped both Endicott College’s three-game win streak and its own three-game losing streak with a 4-1 defeat of the visiting Gulls Wednesday night at Campus Avenue Field, as four different Bobcats scored.
Endicott (6-5) was outdone thoroughly by Bates (5-5) in shots attempted (24-1) and penalty corners (8-0).
The Bobcats dominated the first half, evidenced by a 13-0 advantage in shots attempted, a 6-0 edge in shots on goal and a 7-0 advantage in penalty corners. But the Gulls withstood the constant pressure in keeping it a one-goal game.
The Bobcats scored on the first of those corners, just 5:03 into the contest. Adah Lindquist inserted to Samantha Reiss, who stopped the ball for Jessie Moriarty toward the left side of the top of the circle. The Bobcats’ leading scorer this season banged home her sixth goal for the 1-0 lead.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Taylor Lough drove along the right baseline and shoveled a pass to Alexandra Leahy, who finished the play for her third goal and a 2-0 lead.
Bates took a 3-0 lead in the 42nd minute of the game, as Sydney Beres outfought an Endicott defender near the right post and shot past Gulls goalkeeper Cheka Ventura, for her second goal this season.
Endicott won its first penalty corner of the game in the 55th minute, and a minute later the Gulls cashed in on their offensive pressure as Sophia Cogliano knocked in a loose ball in front on the Gulls’ first shot attempt of the game. The goal is Cogliano’s fifth this season.
Bates regained a three-goal lead on a penalty corner in the 68th minute, as Lindquist inserted to Moriarty, who passed back to Lindquist for a slap shot near the left post for her second goal of the season.
