CLERMONT, Fla. — The Colby College softball team ended the week with a 4-6 record after falling 4-3 in eight innings to Elmhurst College and 8-0 to New Paltz State on Friday.
The Mules lost their second straight extra inning game in the setback to Elmhurst. Colby received fine starting pitching from Julia Saul, who allowed just two earned runs over six innings. Holly Lallis gave up just one hit in the final two innings.
Robin Spofford had two of Colby’s five hits, while Grace Farnkoff had a two-run double. Carly Swartz and Paige Hartnett had the other Mule hits.
After Elmhurst scored twice in the top of the second inning, the Mules took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Saul led off with a walk and moved to second on a Swartz single. Saul scored and Swartz advanced to third when Elmhurst’s pitcher had a throwing error on a ball hit by Lallis. Katie McLaughlin pushed Lallis to second with a sacrifice bunt. After a second out, Farnkoff doubled to bring in Lallis and Swartz.
Elmhurst (6-5) scored a lone run in the top of the fourth to go ahead for good.
